Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Brechin businesses set to benefit from government funding
November 15th, 2009 | by Amy EdwardsStruggling Scottish town centre businesses are set to receive a cash injection of £20 million for regeneration from the Scottish Government.
Communities minister Alex Neil has announced 41 high streets will benefit from the Town Centre Regeneration Fund. Towns all across Scotland have now benefited from the £60 million fund, which gave £40 million away to help to secure 1,000 jobs in August. A wide range of organisations, including Business Improvement Districts, town centre managers and local chambers of commerce will use the money to update shop fronts, improve office space, and upgrade facilities at entertainment venues.
Brechin, Stornoway, Clydebank and Kilmarnoch will receive the biggest share of the allocated £20 million. Clyebank and Brechin will receive £1.8 million each while Stornoway get £1.5 million and £1.1 million will be awarded to Kilmarnoch.
Aberdeen office space will also get a revamp with the £686,031 the council has received for the areas of Mastrick, Peterculter and Cults and Rosemount. Retail Rocks in Torry will also receive £572,500.
Housing and Communities Minister, Alex Neil, said: “It’s vital we support innovative public and private sector companies and community groups to move forward with ideas that will support local jobs, businesses and families. This will provide a boost to our nation’s prosperity and is part of our wider economic recovery plan to ensure Scotland gets through the economic downturn in the strongest possible position.”
It’s hoped these grants will help local businesses to get back on their feet and provide the economy with a much-needed boost.
