American virtual working practices to affect UK
August 2nd, 2008 | by Amy EdwardsA recent report commented that by observing working practices in the US it is possible to get an insight into how those practices will develop here in the UK. The report concentrated primarily on the development of virtual offices.
The large increase in virtual working practices in the US comes mainly from technological innovations, rising costs of office space and fuel prices. In brief, the report had the following findings.
- Two thirds of Americans have worked in a virtual capacity.
- 46% of Americans conduct virtual work about once per week and 14% of them actually do this daily.
- 31% of Americans are part of a virtual management structure
- 27% of Americans are employed by companies that promote virtual work and 48% work for businesses that allow these working practices .
- 91% say that virtual working will save companies considerable time and expense.
Virtual offices can actually help increase productivity and also increase a company’s profitability. However as it stands there are a lot of small businesses going down this path and it is expected that many larger businesses will follow suit over the next couple of years.
