Barclays implement office space efficiency drive
January 12th, 2009 | by Amy EdwardsBy using a new type of desk and room management software, banking giant Barclays is hoping to cut down the amount of office space it uses at it’s UK HQ Churchill Place.
The bank has allegedly saved 20% of premium office space by using these new techniques.
Barclays identified that 20% of desk space was unused at any certain time and that up to 30% of meeting room space was not utilised at the original time it was booked. There could be a number possible reasons for this – increased flexible working and/or staff having to reschedule their diary for example.
To achieve these efficiency savings, Barclays introduced a desk sharing programme, sometimes referred to as “hot-desking”, as well as better management of meeting room bookings. The company sought help from RNM Systems who produce a piece of space management software called “Condeco”.
Using the software, staff can now book their own meeting rooms and desk space as and when they need it, which means space is allocated more efficiently and the company saves on adminstration costs.
What does Choregus think?
This is a shining example of how modern technology can allow for much better use of office space. We have discussed previously what companies can do to improve workspace efficiencies such storing paperwork off-site, making greater use of electronic storage or even re arranging the office so that there is less wastage.
There could be some small downsides for staff, for example some workers might not like having to share desks, but overall, the benefits for the business and the environment are overwhelming.
