Brighton’s ugliest building could receive much needed office space makeover
December 26th, 2009 | by James WelchThe building dubbed the ‘ugliest’ in Brighton has been earmarked for regeneration into office space and residential lets by the Brighton and
Hove Economic Forum and Brighton and Hove City Council.
Anston House, in the Preston Road area of Brighton has been empty since 1988 and is in sore need of repair. Yet, before plans can be made refurbish the building, there is some confusion over its ownership. Bridgetown properties is the legal owner set down in the Land Registry, but they succumbed the the recession earlier this year.
The property was bought for £10.5 million back in 2007, which was a record sum the square footage in Brighton. The money to fund the purchase was put up by Investec Bank
UK Limited, however they claim no rights to owning the building.
Brighton will need to find an extra 20,000 square meters of office space to keep up with demand by 2016. By renewing the life of this building, it would certainly be a good way to partially meet this demand.
A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove council said:
“As soon as it becomes clear that someone is in a position to develop the site we’ll be actively encouraging them to come up with a plan for a mixed use development.”
