Derby office project to create 250 jobs

A six-storey office block will be built in Derby as part of a city regeneration project.
Set to be built on Friar Gate Square, the office space could create 250 jobs, helping to boost local employment.
The city council will invest part of its £10 million regeneration fund on the project – the capital was put together through a partnership with the private sector, which will help to pay for the construction of new office buildings in the city centre.
Councillor Phillip Hickson, leader of the city council, said: “This project will deliver major regeneration benefits and provide an enormous boost for the city. The council has an ongoing commitment to stimulating the economy in Derby and the purpose of the regeneration fund is to help kick-start schemes which otherwise might not start because of the economic climate.”
He added: “If we encourage developers to start work on new schemes, they will become a catalyst for others to follow and the city will benefit from the major inward investment that is generated.”
The project will comprise of two phases. Once the units in the first phase have been taken up, the second stage of construction will begin. The building work will begin on February 13 and will be completed by the the end of January next year.
New jobs in Derby are also set to arise following supermarket chain Morrisons’ decision to open a range of Kiddicare stores in the north and the Midlands. The firm acquired the Kiddicare brand last year and is hoping to open 10 flagship stores.
