Despite recession, SME’s still donating to charities

A new report has shown that more than half of small firms in the Office space UK serviced officesUK are still supporting charities, despite being hit hard by the recession.

Out of 1000 SME’s asked across 20 cities, the majority said that they still offer some form of help, whether it be giving donations or volunteering their time. The news is surprising as the recession has seen many SME’s cut non-essential costs but only 18% reported cutting their charitable support. The survey by Barclays found that over the past 18 months, 36% had maintained a constant level of giving to charities, with 5% reporting an increase in their charitable donations.

Many firms reported a positive attitude to giving to charities, once the recession is over. 16% said they would give more once they were more financially stable, while 71% pledged to continue to maintain their level of support in 2010.

The construction industry in particular proved to be the most generous. Over 61% of those asked in this sector said they helped local charities.

Managing Director of Barclays Local Business, Steve Cooper, said; “The research shows that over half of local businesses see their charity work as a responsibility to the community.”
