FSB: Small businesses need faster broadband

November 4th, 2009 | by Amy Edwards

The Federation of Small Businesses has called for the government to increase the speed of broadband in the Office space UK serviced officesUK for the sake of small businesses.

They claim the government must show more commitment to increasing the speed of broadband in Britain or many SME’s could suffer in the future as a result. It comes after the Swedish government today pledged that 90% of Swedish households would have access to a 100 medgabits per second internet connection by 2020.

The average current speed of broadband in the UK is rumoured to be at a pitiful 2.95 megabits per second according to tests done earlier in the year.

The FSB claim a vast majority of SME’s will come to rely on the internet in the coming years and, unless broadband speed is vastly improved, the internet won’t let them reach their full potential. They point out that, because of the rise in e-commerce, the internet is now vitally important to most small firms.

John Wright, Chairman of the Federation, said; “By 2012, £1 in every £5 will come from online commerce. But if small businesses are to compete, the government must take bolder action. Most small businesses want a minimum broadband speed of eight megabits per second.”

There are now calls for the government to make it a legal obligation to have broadband speeds of at least 4 megabits per second.
