FSB: Tell Lord Sugar; “You’re fired!”
November 7th, 2009 | by Amy EdwardsThe Federation of Small Businesses is calling for Gordon Brown to fire Lord Alan Sugar following his outburst on Tuesday, in which he called struggling SME owners “moaners” who “lived in Disney World”.
Lord Sugar was appointed the Government’s “Enterprise Champion” back in June, but now the FSB are calling for the Prime Minister to appoint “someone with a greater understanding of, and more empathy for, the small business sector.” “The Apprentice” star angered many SME’s with the comments he made at a small business event earlier this week. Lord Sugar has now defended himself by saying his comments were taken out of context and that SME’s are the lifeblood of the UK economy.
The FSB said it had received a number of complaints from small businesses who believed Lord Sugar should now be made to stand down. They believe the businessman has forgotten his small business roots. Chairman of FSB, John Wright, said; “Despite being taken on by the Government to champion business in the UK, Lord Sugar seems to have no grasp of the hard work small businesses do and the role they play in employing 6 in 10 of the country’s private work force.”
Lord Sugar claimed that only 15% of SME’s had something to moan about when they were refused a bank loan. The Amstrad founder said; “I can honestly say a lot of problems you hear from people who are moaning from companies I wouldn’t lend a penny to. They are bust. The moaners are bust. They are bust and they don’t need a bank – they need an insolvency practitioner.”
The outburst is highly embarrassing for the Government after they recently called on banks to loosen their purse strings and lend more to struggling businesses.
