A low carbon mixed-use development in Leeds has filled almost three quarters of its office space since it opened last year.
Offering 15,000 square feet of commercial space, Greenhouse in Beeston was created by sustainable development firm Citu, which specialises in designing cutting edge projects that respect the environment.
The developer refurbished a 1930s hostel called Shaftesbury House to create the scheme, which boasts 60% cheaper energy bills than traditional office spaces. It also contains a 2,480 square foot conferencing suite and a bicycle hub where staff can borrow bikes during their lunch hour.
Other facilities include an on-site gym, integrated broadband and pay as you go internet access for delegates. Even vegetables grown in the Greenhouse allotments are used in the on-site deli, which sources ingredients locally.
North Architects moved into the development after working on the construction phase of the project. Director Matthew Sturgeon said: “Greenhouse has quickly become one of Leeds’ signature buildings with a very strong image and we feel it reflects well on all businesses based here by being a part of it”.
He added: “We’re in the ground floor offices and by being connected to the courtyard we feel part of the building’s activities, our visiting clients always comment on what a buzzing atmosphere there is”.
Citu director Chris Thompson said: “Sustainability is the blood that runs through Greenhouse, it’s what sets it apart and businesses based there appreciate the building lives and breathes sustainability. It’s that which has ensured the commercial element has been, and continues to be, a success”.
