Interview with In Good Company
October 13th, 2008 | by Amy EdwardsI recently conducted an interview with Amy Abrams from In Good Company, an innovative, shared workspace for women entrepreneurs over in New York that is causing quite a stir in business circles and has appeared in several high-profile media reports.
Here is what she had to say:
Please tell me how In Good Company began?
Our years of consulting to many talented and enterprising women helped us to identify several common themes and challenges that affected our client’s success. We frequently met and worked with entrepreneurs who felt isolated as business owners; had difficulty finding affordable office space; lacked a collegial community with whom they could share resources and tricks of the trade; and struggled with where to go when faced with challenges.
Not only were these challenges pervasive but they resonated with us strongly as business owners ourselves! We began to wonder if there was a solution that could address these common needs of women business owners. And so the market research and business planning began…
Flash forward 18 months later, and In Good Company WorkPlaces is launched! Finally – an innovative business that is designed with women business owners’ success in mind!
What are three best benefits that you can give to your clients?
We offer our members the three essential elements every successful business needs: productive workspace, powerful connections to a community of like minded women and effective ideas through our ongoing educational events and seminars.
How successful are your events and are they good fun?
They are wonderful! Our members constantly remark that they always connect with new women who they learn from, share resources and find new business opportunities while having fun!
The consultation service you offer seems very interesting, please tellme more…
We work with women 1:1 to help them through the start – up phase of a business and also through the growing pains of their business. We work in a structured way to help women address their challenges but to learn skills so that they can help themselves in the future.
What part of the business do you get the most enjoyment from?
That I get to meet fascinating and talented women every day! AND that I have a wonderful partner to work with and grow a business with!

I wish we had something like this over on the west coast. Good luck with everything, Amy

A great place. I would love to visit when I next go to NYC. Would it be ok for me to come and have a look around (to Amy)?

Is there anything like this in UK? I imagine ‘nichifying’ offices like this would be a great retention tool

I am not aware of a women’s only place, John, but there are definitely niche centres around the UK, for web/tech companies at least.
