Meetings at a business centre are a waste of time if…
September 8th, 2008 | by Amy EdwardsI have had more than my fair share of meetings in my business lifetime to shower you with stories that would make your toes curl.
I have also had many a meeting in business centres up and down the country which can be either the best or worst way to hold a meeting – and its all down to the organiser – not the company hosting the meeting room.
So why would meetings held at a business centre be a waste of time? Well if you follow the rules below then this will not be the case.
Keep the meeting short – by far the biggest waste I have seen is people continuing an already finished meeting because they have 25 minutes left on the clock – this happens ALL of the time. Momentum leaves the meeting, people are no longer inspired and hurrying out of a meeting room because the next client is peering through the windows is just not the best way to complete what could be an important strategy meeting for your company.
Ask only the people that care – how many times have you seen people simply not interested in the dialogue? They are not in any way helping proceedings and could be causing negative vibes and at best nothing at all. This is a personal gripe of mine, but it is shared by many. What are those people doing working for your company anyway?
Preparation – this one doesn’t really have to be said, but having the right people all knowing what time they should be at the meeting, each with a paper copy of an agenda and plenty to say in a constructive manner. If you require several meetings per day for your team, having someone to conduct the flow of these can significantly improve performance.
Use the services – if you need a projector, or even remotely think you will, get it ordered. They are not expensive. I have been in so many meetings trying to discuss strategy while being put off by a business centre employee fiddling with cables because a projector is now needed. The same goes for whiteboards and video conferencing equipment.
So, there you have it, just a simple list of things to ensure that using a meeting room at a business centre helps you to get your work done and does not an experience that deflates you.
Meeting rooms at business centres are my preferred choice, rather than a pokey room at my own offices, but if the above is not followed, the effectiveness is waived.
