Regal in talks to build biggest tower in Birmingham
October 31st, 2009 | by Amy EdwardsRegal Property Group have submitted plans to develop the £125 million Regus tower in Birmingham which could become the city’s tallest building.
The building will stand on the corner of Broad Street and Sheepcote Street and has been designed by Aedas Architects to stand at 656 feet tall. It will compromise of 56 storeys of office space, retail space and leisure space including a hotel, apartments and boutique shops on the ground floor. It will also include a winter garden and a sky bar. The building will also hold a three floor foyer with a premium restaurant, a 500-person banqueting suite and conference and meeting rooms.
The plans were submitted to Birmingham City Council earlier this week by the Midlands property developer. If given the go-ahead, building work could begin by late 2010 and be completed in 3 years. It would create many employment opportunities during the build and thereafter.
Roger Holbeche from the group believes the 200 metre tall building would create a focal point for the city and provide much-needed state-of-the-art facilities immediately adjacent to Brindleyplace. He said, “The cutting edge design of Regal Tower has the potential to redefine Birmingham’s skyline. The Big City Plan sets out a need for more tall buildings and we are proud to be responding to this with the Regal Tower application.”
Currently the two tallest buildings in Birmingham are the BT tower which stands at 500 feet (152 metres) and Beetham Tower which is 400 feet (122 metres) tall.
