Shaw Lodge Mills to feature on Britain’s Heritage Heroes

The redevelopment of Shaw Lodge Mills in Halifax will appear on BBC2 series Britain’s Heritage Heroes tomorrow.
The gateway to the 10-acre mill complex, Shaw Lodge House, has already been transformed into 10 office suites. The 4,000 square foot building, which was developed by St James Securities, is now home to 17 tenants.
The remainder of the site is still being restored and the story so far will be documented on the half hour episode called ‘The Pennines – Britain’s Mountain Backbone’.
Oliver Quarmby, director of St James Securities, said: “We were very honoured to be part of a programme dedicated to Britain’s heritage and extremely proud that our work at Shaw Lodge Mills was chosen to highlight the work being done to preserve Britain’s past.”
He added: “The redevelopment of the site will be spearheaded by commercial developments so that the original plans for dozens of houses, retirement homes, a health centre, restaurant, shops and even a hotel can be revived in time.”
The series, presented by John Craven and Jules Hudson, will be broadcast every day for the next three weeks.
Shaw Lodge Mills was built during the industrial revolution and employed over 2,000 workers. The building was used to create upholstery fabric called moquette – a thick fabric made of wool and polyester.
Mr Hudson said: “I was rather pleased to be going somewhere like Shaw Lodge Mills. The story of the Industrial Revolution is such an important one in our nation’s history and Halifax played such an important role in that.”
