The Cube in Birmingham nears completion after number of setbacks

The Cube, a 23 storey tower in Birmingham is set to be completed this year, despite a number of setbacks jeopardising its construction.
It is the final part of The Mailbox development that will bring 115,500 sq ft of upmarket offices, designer shops, luxury apartments, art galleries and restaurants.
The developers, Birmingham Development Company and BuildAbility, fell into Administration in March of this year, but PricewaterhouseCoopers pledged that work would continue thanks to additional funding being provided.
David Bailey, business professor at Coventry University, said: “What’s really important is that it’s completed as soon as possible and brought to market to bring the economic benefits for Birmingham.”
Recently, building work has been halted once again, after a Canada goose was found nested in the middle of the site. Now in the final phase of its build, it will have to be delayed until the eggs have hatched and the goose has left.
Fitzgerald, contractors for the building, said: “The goose has been her for about three weeks now, and she’s settling in quite nicely, which is unfortunate for us. The goose has meant we have had to put off finishing the pavements around the bird and its eggs for three weeks.
We have been able to work on other parts of the site in the meantime so we are not losing money but it is a pain that it has delayed the project.”
He added, “It wouldn’t be a good idea to move her before her goslings have hatched. It is frustrating that we’re being held up but I’m sure work will be able to continue as usual once the eggs have hatched.”
